"When I heard the album, I knew I wanted to remix 'The Fix Is In' and it had everything to do with the bass and vocals. I had a hypnotic sort of driving piece in mind, something that would just build and evolve, moving along as if driving, and the vocals do a really good job in that song of rolling along, hypnotizing people. I knew that I wanted to keep the roll going and pull away from the chorus vocals, focusing really on the mounting tension of the verses. I sort of felt the bass moving throughout the piece with various synths building and rising up, especially toward the end.
I stole my son's drum kit to play the syncopated toms. The heads on his drums are pretty beat to shit and have a great paper-smack feel, especially when hit with two sticks across the head. It almost sounds like they are about split and that added energy for me. I played in a hi-hat in two separate passes, hoping to make it feel more open and less restrained because of it, but still tight.
In my studio, the bass is the entire core of the song - big and unapologetic and blistering. That and the kick should, hopefully, make it an easy song to build and play on the floor. I admit that it was done to be played as loudly as possible, with nothing getting in the way of the bass. I hope people like it."
